History

Ann Daugherty, founder and Chief Financial Officer knows first hand how alcoholism and drug addiction can affect the lives of families and loved ones.  Her personal pain over her brother’s death at the age of thirty-six from alcoholism inspired her to help other alcoholics.

Ms. Daugherty had worked for several years as a master’s level psychiatric nurse and therapist.  She specialized in the field of addictions for most of her career.  Through her prior employment, she became aware of a grant available for the treatment of women with addictions. A location for the facility did not appear to be an obstacle for her, as she had a history of opening her home to those in need.  She researched and wrote a grant proposal to start an eight-bed alcohol and drug residential treatment facility.  Ms. Daugherty’s efforts were rewarded with funding to begin operations in her home in July 1985.   

Throughout the years Tara has maintained its family atmosphere, which has contributed to the program’s on-going success.  As the program has grown, the demand for services has increased.  The program now provides treatment for men and women at separate locations. Tara offers a full continuum of services ranging from the most intensive level of care Detoxification to the least intensive, Outpatient.  Tara staff is dedicated and sensitive to the needs of those we serve.  The employees support the program and work as a team to provide a nurturing and therapeutic environment to begin the healing process. 

In Tara’s diligent quest for continued quality client care, it maintains accreditation by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Tara’s highest acclaim, however, comes not from agencies and organizations, but from the individuals and their families whose lives have been drastically changed as a result of their experience at Tara.
